Environment in the Hall

During the refurbishment of the Village Hall, a number of environmental activities have been implemented. As a result of these actions, the hall hopes to reduce its energy footprint substantially, whilst retaining a high level of comfort for the hirers.

Air Sourced Heat Pumps

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a system which transfers  heat from outside to inside a building, or vice versa. Under the principles of vapor compression refrigeration, an ASHP uses a refrigerant system involving a compressor and a condenser to absorb heat at one place and release it at another. They can be used as a space heater or cooler, and are sometimes called "reverse-cycle air conditioners". (Wikipedia)

Air sourced heat pumps have been installed at the Village Hall with the intention of reducing the energy costs for heating the hall. Up to now, the hall has used an oil fired boiler system to pump hot air through vents around the main hall and other rooms.

You will now notice two heat output units mounted above the stage. The external source for these units are mounted on the walls of the courtyard. Controls for the system are mounted just outside the kitchen door.

Solar Panels

To further reduce our energy costs and improve our carbon footprint, we have installed solar panels on the roof.  The control system for these panels is mounted alongside the hot water tanks in the pavilion area.

The units are monitored remotely by our suppliers (AES Systems), and the information is fed back to various web sites allowing local or remote monitoring by the management team. A display unit, monitoring daily and weekly activities has been mounted in the entrance hallway outside the kitchen door.

The system can also be monitored remotely using a PC, Android or Iphone app. The PC monitoring can include energy production on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, as well as comparing the production on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. Each solar unit can be checked for performance, so a failing unit can be detected and repaired quickly.
